Friday 5th January

Only 3 days back, but the children have been fantastic, despite being cooped in a lot of the time due to the awful weather.

We’ve started to read our new book, Nibbles the Book Monster, who loves eating Traditional Tales and we’ll be finding out more about the stories he’s eaten his way into, and lots more.

In maths we’ve been finding out about height and using the words tall and short, and measuring height using blocks.

Mrs Higginbotham has now gone part time, so Hedgehogs now have Mrs Hobin as their teaching assistant on Monday – Wednesday, and Mrs Higgy Wed- Friday.

Next week we’re looking at more traditional tales; this time focusing on Little Red Riding Hood.  In maths we’ll be learning about time, and using sand timers to time ourselves in our different challenges.

Due to the building work that’s taking place in the hall, the children will still be doing PE in their school clothes, so they won’t be needed a PE kit until after February half term.

We still need helpers for the upcoming trip to Chester Zoo.  Please get in touch with reception and they’ll put your name down on the list.

Please can you remember to bring in reading books and homework books by Thursday morning.  Thank you.

Best wishes

Mrs Frost, Mrs Higginbotham and Mrs Hobin

Last week the children chose what topic they wanted to learn about for the next 2 weeks… they picked space!

We have been counting space rocks in maths and finding 1 less, drawing planets using chalk, creating spacescapes on tinfoil using paint and our focus activity this week was baking rock cakes. The role play area became a space station where children were writing their own space cards and we even had a few children pretend to be aliens.

Today we were supposed to have the planetarium in school but unfortunately due to snow in Sheffield they were unable to come to us, however, this has been rescheduled for Wednesday 6th December.

In maths this week we have been looking at 1 less/fewer ready to move onto to subtraction next week.

This week our Learning Super Hero went to Mia for being resourceful and independent in maths and writing during choosing time.

Our attendance this week was 92.5%

Our Nativity will take place at 2pm and 5pm on Tuesday 12th December, tickets are still on sale, at the moment you are only allocated 2 tickets, if there are any spares we will let you know.

Friday 15th December – Christmas Dinner,  This is also our Parent afternoon where we are welcoming you to join us for an afternoon of crafts. 2-3pm.

Wednesday 20th – finish school for Christmas Holidays (normal finish time 3.15).

Reading Tuesday – Every Tuesday morning you are invited to come into school and share a story with your child. This will be until 9.10am when we will then start our day. During this time we will also have a Book Swap Shop where you can swap one of your well-read books for another.

We are also looking for Secret Readers – this will again take place every Tuesday at 2.30, we are hoping to get a mystery guest (a parent) to read our end of the day story. If you are interested in doing this please speak to us so we can add you to our list.

This week we were discovering all about hibernation.  We looked at several books, both fiction and non-fiction to find out that not all animals hibernate and those that do are asleep for ages!  We loved reading ‘The Bear Snores On’ with the added extra of a button that made it sound that the bear was snoring!

In maths we continued learning about adding and how to find out how much 2 numbers are when they are added together.  Some of us are getting really good at writing our own number sentences.  We’ve some super work in the learning journeys.  Next week we’ll be starting to learn about subtraction by learning about one less.

This week our Learning Super Hero was Mazda for his perseverance at settling in and becoming more confident. Well done Mazda!

We’ll be learning a new tricky word each day.  The list of words we’ll be learning will be in the homework book for you to help your child each week.   Thank you .  This week the words are: I   the   and   to   a

The children have chosen their own topic to learn about for the next two weeks: space!  We’ll be learning all about space, taking a look at the International Space Station and wondering if there are any aliens out there…?

We have started learning our songs for our Nativity. Some children are narrators and some children are acting and everyone will have a part. The Nativity will take place at 2pm and 5pm on Tuesday 12th December and tickets will be on sale soon.
We also have our school fair coming up soon on Friday 8th December.

This week our book focus was the Charlie and Lola book ‘I will not Ever Never eat a Tomato’.  We’ve had fun trying different fruit and vegetables and thinking of our own names for them, just like Charlie did for Lola in the book.

Today we talked about Children in Need and how important it is to help others who are less fortunate than we are.

In maths this week we have started looking at adding.  We have our own ‘adding machine’ which we’ll be using next week as we find out all about how to add and write number sentences.

This week our Learning Super Hero was Seren for her superb attitude to her own learning.  Well done!

Congratulations to Scarlett for getting on the Extraordinary Zone by being so resilient.

Next week our topic is Hibernation.  The week after that the children will be able to choose their own topic…I wonder what they’ll choose to learn about?

We have started learning our songs for our Nativity. Some children are narrators and some children are acting and everyone will have a part. The Nativity will take place at 2pm and 5pm on Tuesday 12th December and tickets will be on sale soon.

The children have had a great first week back and have really got stuck into our Superhero Challenges. They have all come back with such great attitudes, all rested and ready to learn.

This week our book focus was ‘Room on the Broom’. Some of the activities out in continuous provision this week have been; making potions in the small world area, creating magic wands with repeating patterns, re-enacting the story using props and masks in our puppet theatre, writing our own potions, labelling the characters from the story and using tweezers to find creepy crawlies in a cauldron of rice.

On Friday we all made a potion where we mixed different ingredients together and had a try!

In literacy we have shared our thoughts on whether the witch was cruel or kind in the story, answered questions based on the book and thought of own ingredients to make a potion. We then ‘powered it up’ and thought of adjectives to describe the ingredients.

Today we also held a minute silence for Remembrance Day and watched a little clip about poppies and why we wear them.

In maths this week we have been looking at repeating patterns. We have looked at patterns in the environment and then verbally followed on both coloured and object patterns. We have worked in pairs to finish off the pattern and made our own patterns using coloured pegs and boards.

This week our Learning Super Heros were Oliver and Henry for coming back to school with a great attitude towards learning.

Our attendance this week is: 95%… this is low for our first week back!

Next week our book topic is ‘I Will Ever Never Eat a Tomato!” We will be doing this book for one week and then moving onto Hibernation.

We have started learning our songs for our Nativity. Some children are narrators and some children are acting and everyone will have a part. The Nativity will take place at 2pm and 5pm on Tuesday 12th December and tickets will be on sale soon.

We also have our school fair coming up soon on Friday 8th December.

Important information

Some building work is taking place in the main building over the next few months. Please take extra care coming into and leaving the building. We have spoken to the children about how to be sensible and safe whilst this is happening.

Parents Evening – Thursday 16th November – please book a time slot with us if you haven’t already done so.

Please remember to put your child’s name on all their jumpers and coats as we have a few without names on.

This week we introduced our Superhero Challenges for Continuous Provision by having a Superhero topic. The children were gripped on Monday as they discovered some of our toys had been taken as a note and a picture had been left. They then found various clues as to who had taken them. We’re hoping we can save them next week and they’re safe and well.

The children have been making superhero masks and capes and using these during role play. Freeing superheroes using fine motor activities such as cracking a code using numicom and numbered locks and unthreading tied up superheroes. Creating wanted posters to help catch the villain and designing their own superhero costumes. We have been discovering various superhero powers and then looking at everyday superheroes such as the police.

This week in maths we have been discovering Numicon and have been playing lots of games in order to recognise it by sight. Numicon is multi-sensory approach to teaching maths and is used in various ways. We will use this throughout the year as a teaching aid. To find out more about Numicon follow the link… https://global.oup.com/education/content/primary/series/numicon/numicon-at-home/?region=uk

This week our Learning Super Hero went to Pippa for her super attitude to learning and always with a smile.

Our attendance this week is: 95% …good but the Rabbits got 99%! Let’s try and beat them this week.

We continued our theme this week around the book ‘Naughty Bus’. The children have enjoyed role playing a bus station and using the till and money to buy bus tickets. They have been using their directional language from last week to move the bus around a mapped out grid.
In Spark your Speech we were trying to use full sentences to describe where the Naughty Bus was by uncovering different locations using a magic pen on our interactive boards. In literacy we also talked about the different feelings both the Naughty Bus and other characters had at various points in the story. We also thought of new places the Naughty Bus could visit.
This week in maths we have been learning about how to find one more of a number. We used bead strings to count and add one more. We had a bus that had to stop at the bus stop and let one more passenger on, could the children find out how many were now on the bus?

Next week we are learning all about Superheroes. We’ll be introducing our Challenge Cards – different learning zones will have different challenges for the children to attempt. When they have completed a challenge, they can move their name up the challenge chart. Just 5 challenges in a week will earn them a wonderful certificate and a chance to receive it in our weekly assembly with Key Stage One! It’s a great way to help encourage the children to learn and complete challenges independently.

This week our Learning Super Hero went to Stanley, for excellent effort with his reading and writing.
Our attendance this week is: 95%, we are this week’s champions!! Well done to everyone who came in.

This week we started our topic book ‘The Naughty Bus’. Over the weekend we were left a present, so on Monday we passed it around and had a guess what it was. There were some great guesses. We’ve been doing observational drawings of transport, role playing using a bus and being a driver, writing our own bus tickets, creating signs and of course, singing ‘The Wheels on the Bus”.

In Spark your Speech this week we went on a bus ride… Our aim was to say who and where we would be going on our bus. In small groups we drew pictures onto double decker busses of ourselves and the person we were travelling with. We then shared it with the class modelling good sentence structure.

This week in maths we have been using positional language. We worked in pairs to give instructions to place a teddy in various spots around the classroom.

Thank you for your support with home learning. It’s fantastic to see so many reading books being changed weekly and home learning challenges being completed. Please don’t forget to sign the reading log, even if you initial it, this way we know you’ve read the book and can change it.

Some people have mentioned that they struggled to log into ActiveLearn. I have brought this up with our IT support and they have mentioned that it could be down to the security settings and allowing popups.

Just a reminder that in Early Years we do have a lot of messy and sensory play as this helps children to explore and learn. Although we provide aprons and remind the children to wear them, on occasions they may come home messy (it means they’ve had a great day). So please be mindful if you are buying any new uniform or coats. The weather is getting colder and we do head outdoors in all-weather so please ensure your child has a winter coat with them, preferably with a hood.

We are running very short on spare knickers and socks/tights so if you have any spare at home please could you kindly donate them. Thank you in advance.

This week our Learning Super Hero went to Ethan T, for being positive towards learning and trying new things with such enthusiasm.

Our attendance this week is: 91.7%. Sadly we have yet to win the Early Years Attendance Trophy. As a school we aim for 97% so we’re quite far off.

Important information

Please remember to put your childs name in all their jumpers and coats as we have started to gather a few that have no names on.

This week… We have been reading a story called ‘The Naughty Bus’. Could you have a look out for different types of transports or different vehicles? You could even go for a trip on a bus or a tram. Can you spot the numbers or letters on the front? Take a picture or draw a picture of what you’ve seen.

Have a lovely weekend, see you on Monday,

Over the past two weeks in Literacy we have been reading ‘First Week of Cow School’. Today we invited in the adults to share our story using actions. Thank you to all of those who attended. This week in maths we have been doing lots of aspects of counting and matching numbers to quantities.

As we entered Autumn this week we have been looking at the changes it is bringing. We have been collecting leaves and using wax crayons to do leaf rubbings.

Next week we start our new book, ‘The Naughty Bus’.

This week our Learning Super Hero went to Abu, for super enthusiasm for his learning.

What a great first full week we’ve had. The children are settling in much better this week and have really taken it in their stride. They are beginning to understand the rules and routines of the class and have formed some lovely new friendships.

This week the children have enjoyed various activities from painting, threading, playing in home corner, dough disco, outdoor messy play, water play and number matching bingo. They have also been making their own snack and washing up after themselves. We have spent a lot of time getting to know our new class friends, learning to share our resources and being independent within our Early Years unit. We have enjoyed reading lots of stories and learning new songs, especially our ‘days of the week’ song.

Next week we start a new book for our theme, ‘First Week of Cow School’. Follow us on Twitter to find out what activities we are doing.

Important information

Please remember to put your childs name on all their jumpers and coats as we have a few without names on.

If you haven’t done so already, please return your Tapestry form so we can allocate you to the account to share your child’s learning journey.

If you wish to leave a pair of wellies in school for your child, you are more than welcome to. (please put their names in)
